of the soundtrack because there’s no

stereo. As we were going over things,

and with the hub fi xed, I started to take

a look, realising that the plastic strips

that hold the mirror glass in place are

quite easy to remove and, using some

rubber edging strip left over from Subby’s

rear doors, I was able to pack out the

mirror. Nipping up the two screws at

the base also stopped them shaking!

Why, oh why, did I not do this before?

Our trip to St Austell was quite

uneventful, the usual nonsense around

Stonehenge, with tra c coming to a

standstill. It’s been there for years. Get

over it! STElf is still a bit fumy in the

STElf displayed at the Riviera
Run. For a laugh I entered it into
Show ’n’ Shine and hoped for
a visually-impaired judge.

cabin so I’m going to look at the breather
setup when I get a moment. Tickover
seemed to be down too, which I tried
to adjust, but made a mess of things
with the twin carbs. Thankfully AC
Dodd had a tech tent at the Riviera Run
so, whilst most people were o on the
Sunday cruise, he checked things out
and balanced the twin HS2s back up.
He said the needles were spot on. They
were set up some years ago by Alan at
ATSpeed in Essex but the carbs now need
a rebuild as they are badly worn which,
considering STElf’s rallying history, isn’t
a surprise. That job will be done one day
but it’s not a priority at the moment.

We took STElf out for a drive on a
Cornish cream tea and pasty hunt and
he was put through his paces, with four
adults crammed in. Thankfully there was
only one near-miss, with an Audi driver
who had no concept there would be other
car drivers on the tiny country road.
STElf’s Tar-ox brake discs came in very
handy! It was what I would call a bunny-
nose moment. We were also stopped by a
farmer, tending her stock, to look at Elfy
near to the stunning Caerhays Castle
grounds. She said she had one as her fi rst
car and seeing the Elf really made her
day. It’s nice to bring a smile to people’s
faces with such a cheeky little car.
