he 2019 Surrey Hills Mini Run,
was, as always, held on Easter
Monday, which this year fell
on 22 April. Organised by the
Surrey Hills Mini Group, this was their
14th run. With Easter being slightly later
this year, we were hoping for a warm
day. Unpredictable weather at Easter
means that previous runs have been
a ected by rain and storms with fallen
trees three years ago. This year we
were blessed with glorious sunshine,
which encouraged a bumper turnout
of 55 cars! This run is usually restricted
to classic Minis only, although it was
fun to see a Frog Eye Sprite joining in.
The journey started at the club’s
regular meeting place, the Royal Oak at
Pirbright, where the pub opened early
to provide co ee and bacon rolls for
participants. The organisers had, once
again, worked hard to fi nd a lovely route
through the Surrey countryside with
a mix of narrow lanes, hills, wooded
vales and open country. Spring fl owers
such as bluebells carpeted the verges
and oilseed rape brightened the fi elds.
The run ended at The Mill at Elstead,
a pub in a converted mill on the River
Wey, near Godalming. This was a
great place for everyone to relax
and soak up the sunshine, enjoying
the barbecue laid on by the pub.
SHMG always donates the entrance
fees to a local charitable cause. This year
it raised £350 for the Curtis Myles Fund.
Curtis, aged fi ve, tragically lost his life in
a recent local tra c accident. He was the
nephew of two of the club’s members.
