look at the entry gate – is there a
security checkpoint to prevent
unauthorised access?
Looking to the future
Secure parking facilities are key to
protecting the wellbeing of drivers and
avoiding disruption. As awareness of the
cargo theft and lack of parking grows, so
too do the number of solutions to help
expand provision of spaces and
strengthen security.
Advances in technology are paving the
way in this regard. For example,
automatic numberplate recognition
(ANPR) introduces an additional level of
security to prevent unauthorised access
by only allowing pre-registered vehicles
to enter truck parks, and sensor-based
parking is able to detect a vehicle or load
breach and trigger an alarm to alert on
or off-site staff.
There are multiple secure parking
developments underway across the
country to expand on-site parking
capacity. For our part, Certas Energy is
working closely with partners to offer
best practice secure parking to HGV
drivers as part of our bunker site
network expansion strategy. One of
our upcoming collaborative
developments at Red Lion Truck Stop –
located in the heart of the Golden
Triangle off the M1, Junction 16 – will
offer 24/7 refuelling and secure parking
for 180 trucks, protected by CCTV,
perimeter fencing, security lighting and
on-site staff patrols.
Furthermore, SNAP – best known for
the SNAP Account system – has opened
up an additional 220,000 spaces via its
Depot Parking system, through which
transport operators are able to offer out
free spaces in their yard for HGV drivers
to park securely. There are 32 Depot
Parking sites currently available for
SNAP Account customers to pre-book
across the country.
Keeping drivers safe plays an
important role in protecting the
reputation of the haulage industry and
filling the skills shortage. With theft
prevention awareness on the rise, new
technologies helping to protect vehicles
and a growing commitment to the
provision of secure parking spaces, the
transport industry is primed to tackle
this pressing issue. n
