rexit may have taken a back seat in the news lately, but the
realities of leaving the EU in October is still casting a shadow
over the road transport industry. So it’s perhaps some surprise to
learn new truck sales have surged in the UK this year. Find out
the statistics – plus all the latest industry news – starting page 6.
According to the latest data from the DfT, Britain is in the grip of a
secure parking crisis. Of course, this isn’t news to the nation’s truck
drivers and operators, who have to face the realities of brazen cargo theft
on a daily basis. Safe parking spots are few and far between, but there’s
lots hauliers can do to improve the safety of their drivers and their loads.
Read our expert advice, starting page 16.
There’s no mistaking our cover star this issue. Hawkins Logistics has a
fine tradition of spec’ing top-flight trucks for its fleet flagships, and its latest purchase is no
exception. The operator’s DAF XF480 tractor unit is a driver’s dream and boasts incredible
airbrushing by Andy Freeberne, which celebrates Marvel’s blockbusting Deadpool movies. It’s a
real cracker, and you can get the full story starting page 60.
Blackburn-based Bowker leans towards more conventional colours, but its fleet is no less
impressive. Indeed, the operator has just taken delivery of a first-class pair of Volvo FH16 tractor
units to celebrate its 100th year in business – and we were first in line to pay them a visit. Find
out all about the new trucks and the firm’s diverse road haulage history, starting page 52.
Also this issue, we’ve a round-up of the latest consumer dash cams (page 24), Bill Dean has
unearthed the fascinating story of Britain’s Jacob Morrison, the TRUE inventor of the diesel
engine (page 66), an insightful account of how NOT to manage meals on the road (page 68), plus
Ed takes an in-depth look at Canadian super-heavies in Classic Truck (page 78). Enjoy your read!
