Driver’s verdict: Andy Cox, DAF XF480

Originally from Edinburgh, 58-year old
Andy has been a truck driver since 1993
and has been with PJ Thory for the last
six years.
“The DAF is a very good truck. I’ve
previously had XFs and always liked
them; in fact I think they are the best. I
had an XF105-460 before this on a
60-plate and it’s still going. I don’t really
rate the CFs at all, as there is not
enough room in them.
“This XF480 pulls well. It’s very
comfortable and there’s loads of space
to fit in all my stuff and still be able to
move about. I actually think the Super
Space Cab is too big; it’s like walking
into a great cave! I think to myself: ‘What
do I do with all this space?’
“I’d previously had a CF and they
were just too small. I’m a tramper so I’m

away all week, often doing four or five
nights a week, so the extra room of the
XF is a must.”
Andy’s new truck was only three
weeks’ old when Trucking went to
visit, and he’s already put his mark on it
with some subtly Scottish-influenced
interior customising.
“I had no issues with the XF I had
before – and I did a million kilometres in
it. The only problems were a few hoses
and perishable parts naturally gave up,
but there were no major issues of note.
“I would take a DAF if ever given the
choice. I don’t really likes Scanias – they
hurt my back!
“I expect I will keep this XF until I retire
unless the boss says differently. I plan to
give in my keys at 67 so I could have it
for nine years!”

support a truck in the way an operator
would like, then the chances are next
time the business will shop elsewhere
when looking to replace or enhance
its fleet. Both these trucks are
generally superb and if supported
well, they will deliver what is
expected of them. Each of the marques
are widely respected by both
operators and drivers alike.
Probably few would argue with the
fact that the Scania is certainly the
more aspirational of the two models,
but it would be naive to think every
single driver is desperate to get their
hands on a Scania – despite what
Jeremy Clarkson may believe. That
said, few drivers will actually
complain about the Swedish machine.
