His can-do attitude as Chris Traeger, a city manager on NBC’s Parks & Recreation, was infectious, and his
portrayal of fast-talking and intelligent Sam Seaborn on The West Wing was admirable. But Rob Lowe’s
time in the spotlight has been anything but perfect, and he examined those moments and more in his
two memoirs. In his one-man show, which comes to Belk Theater this month, he expands upon these
stories with candor and wit. Here’s an excerpt from his 2011 book, and the title of his tour, Stories I Only
Tell My Friends:
“I’m thinking of how unexpected yet oddly preordained life can be. Events are upon you in an instant,
unforeseen and without warning, and o¡entimes marked by disappointment and tragedy but equally
o¡en leading to a better understanding of the bittersweet truth of life.”
