FATHER
OF THE YEAR
2019 AWARDS

D. Steve Boland

Managing Director
Consumer Lending
Bank of America
At Bank of America, Steve is the Head of Consumer Lending, responsible for $100 billion in annual
originations and a $290 billion consumer balance sheet. He is also the Head of the Retail segment for
Consumer & Small Business and is a member of Bank of America’s Management Committee. Steve grew
up between Jamaica, New York City and south Florida and is a vice chair of the bank’s Global Diversity
and Inclusion Council. He’s been recognized three times by Black Enterprise Magazine, including one
of 2017’s Most Powerful Executives in Corporate America. Steve is currently on the Mortgage Bankers
Association Board of Directors, Greater Charlotte Cultural Trust Board and the University of Minnesota’s
Carlson School of Management Information Decision Sciences Advisory Board. Steve says he absolutely
loves being a dad, learning who his children are at every stage and helping them find their own identities.
And they’ve helped him to learn to poke fun at himself, Steve says, especially with their “truisms about
dad.” Steve and his wife, Katrice, have three children: Steve Jr., 21, Luke, 19, and Gabrielle, 16.

Randy Gartz

Managing Director
Technology, Recruiting & Consulting
Fairview Search Group
In the last 26 years, Randy has used his executive search and career guidance expertise to find
employment for more than 2,000 technology, accounting and finance professionals, currently in
technology and project management through Charlotte’s Fairview Search Group. As a member of
the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce, he has helped bring new businesses, such as top 10 global
supply chain logistics company XPO Logistics, to the city. Randy has been a long-time member of
Charlotte’s Walk to Stop Diabetes Committee and has coached kids’ soccer for more than 10 years. He
said fatherhood has taught him just how caring and impatient he can be – all at the same time. Randy
says he’s always told his daughters not to worry about what everyone else is doing, just do your best,
whatever that is. Randy and his wife, Cindy, are the parents of Rachel, 24, and Olivia, 22.

Michael Smith
President and CEO
Charlotte Center City Partners
A Greensboro native, Michael has been the driving force behind numerous city-changing initiatives
since 2005 as the head of Charlotte Center City Partners, which envisions and implements programs
to drive the economic, social and cultural development of the city’s central business district. He is the
immediate past chairman of the International Downtown Association Board of Directors and currently
is on the regional boards of the Boy Scouts of America Mecklenburg Council, UNC Charlotte’s Belk
College of Business and the Fletcher School. Michael says he grew up surrounded by love, and he’s
focused on teaching his kids the importance of faith, honesty and hard work. And his kids, he adds,
would say he’s certainly not afraid to spin a joke or tale. Michael and his wife, Kathleen, have three
children: Katherine, 20, Michael, 18, and Lillian, 15.

Dwight Gibson

President
Flow Food & Beverage
SPX FLOW
A native of Jamaica, Dwight leads a global, 2,500-person food and beverage team at SPX FLOW, a leading
global supplier of highly engineered flow components, process equipment and turnkey systems for the
power and energy and food and beverage industries, as well as industrial end-markets. He’s been recognized
twice in Savoy magazine as one of America’s top African American executives (2016, 2018) and named one
of the 300 most powerful executives in corporate America by Black Enterprise magazine (2017). A global
citizen and community supporter, Dwight is on the Board for the World Affairs Council of Charlotte, and is
a Board of Advisors member of the Howard University School of Business. Dwight tells his three daughters
that he never wants them to “swim in a sea of mediocrity,” and that they always should be the best version
of themselves they can be. They like to do the same workout at the gym, where Dwight says he now tries
to keep pace with them. Dwight and his wife, Ericka, are the proud parents of Enoá, 19, Ari, 15, and Ila, 8.
