The South African Artist – July 2019

In January 1996 Dulcie Robinson and Edward Selematsela
started art classes to encourage the development of artists from
previously disadvantaged backgrounds, who had no funds for
formal art tuition. The iniative gave them access to regular art
lessons as well as an opportunity to exhibit their art through the
co-ordination of exhibitions and competitions. The group was
called The Little Artists’ Schools Project, and the initiative is still
going strong today. They now have a larger, more permanent
space to work in, and many of their students have gone on to
become professional artists - like Buhle Calvin Hlatswayo. Buhle
counts founder and well-known artist, Edward Selematsela as one
of his biggest influences and his greatest teacher.
