STEP 1: STARTING POINT

Unless you’ve tackled flowers numerous times
before and know exactly how and what type of
flowers you are about to paint, then lightly sketch
the composition up front, from your reference.

STEP 2:
Start by wetting the entire surface and introduce a
background colour in the top right hand side of the
paper – this will help balance out the final composition
and the focal point which occurs approximately in
the lower left third of the paper - a general rule for
focal point which works well.

STEP 3:
Working wet-in-wet, start to introduce the main
colours and don’t stress if they run a bit – this adds
to the looseness of the final painting!

STEP 4:
Here I have used Cadmium Red and have added
some French Ultramarine to start positioning the
purple coloured flowers.
