Winning Suggestion
I would like to know about the different
types of pencils and which pencils can be
used in conjunction with other mediums.
I would also like to undestand if different
types can be used together eg can
polychromos and watercolour pencils be
used together?
Debra Throup - Benoni, Gauteng

There is a lot to inspire you in this month’s jam-packed issue:
urban sketching, hyper-realistic drawings, painting with gouache,
pastel street scenes of Jozi, and beautifully rendered oil paintings.

Once again, we urge you to get out of your comfort zone and try
something new. Gouache is a medium that most artists shy away
from because it is best known for being used in graphic design studios, but Free State artist,
Rentia Coetzee put it to the test and was pleasantly surprised with the results. Our resident
experts Grant Wood, Malcolm Dewey and Louis Trichardt, continue to offer great practical
advice; and this month’s Winsor & Newton painting challenge shows just how unique all of our
styles can and should be.

As a special treat, there is a feature on international artist, John Wentz, who gives us an insight
into his daily routine and painting techniques. Finally, our cover competition is now in full swing

  • don’t miss out on the chance to win that fabulous prize!

Happy painting.
