STEP 3:

Keep on adding colour for depth and texture.
Gouache underlayers can easily be re-activated
so add colours gently. Vary brush sizes and
strokes for added interest.

STEP 4:
Gouache colours need to be mixed beforehand
as they do not pool and mingle like watercolour.

I decide to darken the background to make my
notan (Japanese for “light and dark pattern”)
stronger and for a more dramatic effect.

STEP 5:
I add final details after taking a break - a fresh
eye is needed to finish it off!

I have really enjoyed working with gouache. It
dries quickly and is easy to transport which is
ideal for plein air, so I will definitely be doing
more gouache painting with this lovely set from
Reeves.

The watercolour boards are an added bonus:
you don’t need to stretch paper or tape it down,
it doesn’t buckle and the texture is good.

Thank you to Hannes du Plessis for the use of
his photographic reference.
