The quality is incredibly high and the unique stretching system is very
professional. Really, I love them and I shall be ordering more soon!
They are very beautiful to work with thank you.

Arriving at the Italian Art
Frame Shop is not dissimilar
to visiting a London Tailor
to have a fine suit made.
The selection of canvases
is quite out of this world,
from the very rough to the
very smooth, and the very
expensive to the well-priced.

I chose a canvas that
made my eyes water at the
price, but the frame and its
finishing is fantastic. Imported sustainable forest wood frames, with
a remarkable new tighten system to match. The canvas is so well
stretched; it’s as tight as drum, and a dream to paint on. Well done to
all involved, in tailor-making this service available to us all.

Anyone who knows my work, will know that I paint on large canvases.
It was such a nice surprise when I visited the Italian Artshop and saw
that they had opened their sister shop: The Canvas Company. They
specialize in large canvases which is perfect for me as my preferred
size is 1.5 x 2 m.

This is really a unique canvas making operation and I’ve never seen
anything like it in South Africa (or even overseas for that matter).
The variety of cotton and linen options is vast! My favourite is
the medium weave oil primed linen, and the medium weave
acrylic primed linen for when I’m doing acrylic underpaintings.
But they have various cottons including ultra smooth and oil primed,
various oil primed linens, clear primed linens, raw linen and even a
stunning Jute. What I love is that their Austrian Red Fir is sustainably

harvested. This wood is very strong and makes a great
support for heavy linens. It is prized for its strength and
straightness.

The Canvas Company doesn’t use the usual
wedges in their frames, but instead utilises a
‘heart’ system that offers far greater flexibility and
means that your canvas will always remain tight.
It looks very professional and I am proud to show
potential buyers the quality of this product.

Whilst I will always opt for good quality linen, Skye at
the Canvas Company assures me that they cater to all
artists, and their standard universal primed cotton is very
competitively priced at only R110 per square meter. You
can get a big 1.2 x 1.5 m canvas in this cotton (on a 35mm
frame using the lovely heart system) for only R1,130.

There is also a very wide range of ready
made canvases available for the small to
medium sizes and these you can see at
http://www.italianartshop.co.za. A 40 x 50 cm canvas, for
example, starts off at only R112 for Italian cotton, but is
also available in oil primed cotton and universal primed linen. I can’t
always plan in advance and sometimes I have urgent commissions, so
it’s really great that they have such a fast turnaround time - sometimes
I can get a big canvas in just one day!

The customer service that one has come to know and love
about the Italian Artshop is certainly carried over to the Canvas
Company. And it’s such a treat to be able to do all my art material
shopping and canvas shopping in one place. The excellence and
professionalism at The Canvas Company is second to none...
the friendliness, constant research and adaptability of this
company is fantastic and makes it a pleasure to deal with them.
