LEGACY: Helena Hugo
Opening: 12 July 2019 at 18:30 for 19:
Walkabout: Saturday 20 July 2019 at 11:

Hugo is known for her detailed drawings of people, mostly
hand labourers. Lately she has started to experiment with
various mediums: fibre arts, using re-appropriated clothing
previously worn and owned by migrant workers, photography
and printmaking. Through these mediums she investigates
the frailty of human life and the even greater precarious
fragility of nature. In her exhibition “Legacy” she explores the
unease we as humans experience with the idea of the loss of
“self” which can be equaled to the fear of death and how it
sometimes manifests in destructive behaviour towards other
humans, animals and nature. Fueled by our need to dominate
or to possess, it also becomes apparent in our need to be
remembered.

CATCH 22 [ESCAPING ORDER]: Eric Mnguni
Opening: 17 July 2019 at 18:

Catch 22 [escaping order] is an abstract exploration of the
relationship between chaos and order. From our bedrooms
that are a constant reminder of our desperate attempts to
hold on, to control thinking that we have power over the chaos
that sneaks into our sacred spaces at night, to rearrange our
furniture and steal our socks while we sleep, to the mundane
frustrations of work and home, corporate and political offices,
chaos is constant, order is temporary. Mnguni works in various
mediums, from pencil, fine liners, markers, gouache, to digital
and found objects. This is Mnguni's first solo.
