The power of the postcard has threaded meaning into my life. To this
day, when I wake up and want to write in an abstract way, I start
reaching out for the white mixed media 300 gsm paper no bigger than
10 x 15cm.


One of the most unexpected gifts given to me was a box containing
about 200 postcards created by 20 artists and creatives in my
community. A gesture of generous proportion. Each postcard was a
visual and verbal delight. One card came to me for my birthday, and
the others were to hand out at a Conference in East London where I
was the opening speaker.


Looking back at the photographs of this event, I remember the spray
of postcards circling me as I spoke. It was as if my skirt extended out
into the room. As if the tide of love and care shown in the postcards
was eager to reach the hands of the recipients before me. Soon after I
finished describing the nature of creativity, and how it can be released
in everybody’s life, each person came forward to choose the card that
had caught their eye, and they each walked away with a treasured
gift.

Postcards caught eyes and stole hearts. If you think back to what may
