The leadership structure
created conflict between
Hasker and longtime CAA
insiders, including manag-
ing directors Lourd and Hu-
vane, said one person famil-
iar with the matter.
In a Wednesday state-
ment, TPG confirmed that
Hasker is exiting effective
immediately and will be-
come a senior advisor to
TPG. There, he will work
with the company’s Inter-
net, Digital Media and Com-
munications group.
“Since joining CAA,
Steve has helped create the
foundation for the next
phase of growth at the
agency,” said Jim Coulter,
co-founder and co-CEO of
TPG.
“Steve’s leadership of key
initiatives ... was important
in advancing CAA’s long-
term strategy.”
Before joining Nielsen in
2009, Hasker served as part-
ner at McKinsey & Co.’s
global media, entertain-
ment and information prac-
tice, focusing on television,
film, sports, data and digital
advertising. He previously
served in multiple financial
jobs in the U.S., Russia and
Australia.TPG Capital, formerly
known as Texas Pacific
Group, became the majority
shareholder of CAA in 2014.
The company previously ac-
quired a 35% stake in CAA in
2010, before bumping up its
investment to approxi-
mately 53%.
The earlier investment
spurred growth in CAA’s
sports arm, which launched
in 2006. TPG is also known
for its investments in Uber,
Airbnb, Spotify and Bur-
bankstudio STX Entertain-
ment.
CAA is the second-larg-
est talent agency, trailing
Beverly Hills-based William
Morris Endeavor. WME

Hasker’s exit comes at a
pivotal time for Century
City-based CAA and rival
agencies, which are in the
midst of a tense standoff
with the Writers Guild of
America. The WGA this year
instructed its members to
fire their agents because of a
dispute over packaging fees
the agencies take in ex-

stalled equipment to make

The production an-
nouncement comes after a
months-long shortage of the
popular soy-based beef re-
placement. Impossible
Foods recently moved to
three eight-hour shifts from
two 12-hour shifts in July.
Soy leghemoglobin, or
“heme,” is the ingredient
that gives the Impossible
Burger its essential meat-
like flavor, along with a red
hue. But it hadn’t been for-
mally approved as a safe col-
or additive, meaning retail-
ers couldn’t sell it raw as they
can raw Beyond Meat
patties.
That meant Impossible
Foods has been limited to
selling in restaurants. It’s of-
fered at large restaurant
chains Red Robin and White
Castle, and it has signed a
deal to be sold in all 7,300
Burger Kings nationwide by
the end of the year.
“We are in the midst of a
revolution in food technol-
ogy that in the next 10 years
will likely lead to more inno-
vations in food and ingredi-
ent production than there
have been in the past half
century,” said Dennis Keefe,
director of the Office of Food
Additive Safety in the FDA’s
Center for Food Safety and
Applied Nutrition. “As these
new products and ingredi-
ent sources come to the mar-
ket, the FDA has a responsi-
bility to provide the appro-priate regulatory oversight
to protect public health by
ensuring that these new
foods and food ingredients
are safe.”
One indication of the
boom in meat-free patties is
the stratospheric rise in the
stock price of Beyond Meat.
Shares of the El Segundo
company have jumped more
than 700% since their May 1
debut, and closed up 0.9% to
$196.51 on Wednesday.
That precipitous jump
has generated intense inter-
est among short sellers, whoborrow shares on the bet
that they can be paid back
with cheaper shares after
the price plunges.
Almost 45% of the Be-
yond Meat shares that were
in the hands of public in-
vestors as of July 30 were
borrowed for short selling,
according to data from S3
