United in talks over

Dybala-Lukaku swap

Manchester United are holding talks
that could lead to Paulo Dybala signing
from Juventus as part of a swap deal
involving Romelu Lukaku.
Dybala’s agent is in England for dis-
cussions with United and the player
will then decide whether he wants to
move to Old Traff ord. His preference
is to stay at Juventus but an attractive
off er could change his mind and he
knows his club would like him to go if
it clears the way to sign Lukaku.

Dybala is a creative attacking player
who joined Juventus from Palermo
in 2015 for an initial €32m and was
part of the Argentina squad at last
year’s World Cup and this year’s Copa
América.
The 25-year-old can play across a
variety of attacking roles and scored
the only goal in Juventus’s Champions

League group victory at Old Traff ord
last October.
Lukaku has been a prime target
for Antonio Conte but Internazionale
failed with a £54m bid and have said
they cannot increase that.
“We made a strong off er, one that is
valid and suited to the transfer value of
the player and we were unable to con-
clude a deal,” the Inter chief executive,
Beppe Marotta, told Sky Sport Italia.
“The club is strong, but we need to
stay within certain parameters. The
club has made big investments and we
believe we’re already at a good stage
in the process.”
That has led Juventus, who are
managed by Maurizio Sarri, to try to
sign Lukaku. The forward is keen on
a transfer after two seasons at United,
whom he joined from Everton.
Lukaku has not played in pre-sea-
son because of injury and was not part
of the squad who beat Kristiansund
1-0 in Norway last night in the penulti-
mate match for Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s
team before their opening Premier
League game at home to Chelsea on
Sunday 11 August.

Everton agree £29m Kean

deal and sell Gueye to PSG

Fabrizio Romano

Everton have concluded a deal with
Juventus to sign Moise Kean for an
initial €32m (£29m) and the forward
is expected to arrive today to fi nalise
the move.
The signing of the 19-year-old Italy
international would be a signifi cant
coup for Everton, who have also sold
the midfi elder Idrissa Gueye to Paris
Saint-Germain for a fee understood
to be €32m.
Everton could end up spending
€40m on Kean with add-ons and
have agreed to pay him £2.75m a
year. Juventus had wanted a buy-back
clause but instead they will be told of
any bid so they can choose whether to
match it. The player, who had one year
remaining on his contract, scored six
Serie A goals in 13 games last season
and has played three times for Italy.
Kean was among the Juventus play-
ers who had racist abuse directed at
them by Cagliari fans during a game
there in April. He reacted to monkey
chants by celebrating in front of the
home supporters after scoring.
Marco Silva had hoped to keep
Gueye at Goodison Park but the player
was determined to join the French
champions after Everton rejected an
off er from them in January.
“I wanted to give a new boost

to my club career by joining Paris
Saint-Germain, one of the most struc-
tured and ambitious sports projects in
Europe,” Gueye said.
“I’d like to thank the directors, the
coach and his staff for the confi dence
they have shown in me. I will do eve-
rything to justify the faith they have
shown in me and to integrate into this
talented squad.”
Everton have made a substantial
profi t on the 29-year-old Gueye, who
signed from Aston Villa for £8m in

  1. The Senegal international has
previously played in France for Lille
    from 2008-15.
    Everton have signed the versatile
    Fabian Delph from Manchester City
and the goalkeeper Jonas Lössl this
    summer and turned André Gomes’s
loan from Barcelona into a permanent
    transfer.

Chelsea ban

fan for life

after fi nding he

abused Sterling

Chelsea have banned for life a fan
they concluded had racially abused
Raheem Sterling at Stamford Bridge
last season and excluded fi ve support-
ers for between one and two years over
incidents at the same match.
Sterling was abused when he
retrieved a ball in front of the Matthew
Harding stand during Manchester
City’s game at Chelsea last December.
Chelsea said they had concluded
their investigation and issued the
bans after the Crown Prosecution
Service decided not to initiate crimi-
nal prosecutions and that video evi-
dence and lip-reading experts had
been used.
“One individual has been perma-
nently excluded from Stamford Bridge
for the use of racially abusive language
and threatening and aggressive behav-
iour,” the club said. “Prior to making its
decision the club noted the decision of
the CPS not to charge this individual
with a criminal off ence. While the club
respects the decision of the CPS the
question that it had to determine was
not whether a criminal off ence had
been committed but rather whether
the individual acted in breach of the
ticketing terms and conditions.
“In this regard, the club operates
to the civil standard of proof, which is
entirely diff erent to the criminal stand-

ard. The club took into account the
denial made by the individual as well
as a range of other evidence, includ-
ing video evidence and evidence from
two lip reading experts – both of whom
advised that the individual had used
words that are racially abusive.”
Chelsea said the fi ve temporary
bans had been issued “for the use
of abusive language and threatening
and aggressive behaviour”. The club
added: “Individuals receiving the
shorter exclusion did so on the basis
that they have provided undertakings
about their future behaviour.”
In the case of the fan banned for life,
Chelsea concluded: “Given the par-
ticular circumstances , the club did not
consider attendance at an education
course in return for a reduced sanction
would have been appropriate.”
Chelsea said the supporters had
been off ered the right to appeal and
that, where applicable, these had been
heard.

ers Kick It Out praised Chelsea for
sending a “strong message” against
racism. Guardian sport

Jill Ellis is to step down as the manager
of the United States women’s team in
October. Ellis led the team to consecu-
tive World Cup titles, culminating in
their 2-0 win over the Netherlands in
Lyon on 7 July.
The 52-year-old said it was the
“right time” to retire from the role,
with the search for her successor to
start after the appointment of a new
general manager.
Ellis said: “The opportunity to
coach this team and work with these
amazing women has been the honour
of a lifetime. I want to thank and praise
them for their commitment and pas-
sion to not only win championships
but also to raise the profi le of this sport
globally while being an inspiration to
those who will follow them.”
Ellis took charge in 2014 and her

fi rst World Cup triumph, over Japan
in Canada, was one year later. She will
leave having won 102 internationals
and as the fi rst manager in history to
win two women’s World Cups.
Ellis, who will continue for at least
the next year in an ambassadorial
role, added: “When I accepted the
head coaching position this was the
timeframe I envisioned. The timing is
right to move on and the programme
is positioned to remain at the pin-
nacle of women’s soccer. Change is
something I have always embraced
and for me and my family this is the
right moment.” PA Media
