MESO DOSING
So you’ve been necking turmeric lattes and sipping
green tea all winter... but has it actually done you any
good? Possibly not, say advocates of ‘meso dosing ’.
Their theory is simple: active plant compounds can
cure what ails you, but only if taken in the kind of volumes your
day-to-day diet just can’t deliver. Supplement-strength doses
of plant extracts will, say fans, make sure you get the ‘meso’,
or in-between nutrients from any given food in helpful amounts.
So is it a revolution in nutrition, or just a fresh facelift for
a jaded supplements market? Time will tell...

AND, ER, MORE GIN
Nope, it’s going nowhere, but
expect lavoured blends to
outshine pure distillations in 2019.
“The retail market for lavoured
gin is now worth £232m, and last year alone grew
£197m,” says Gemma Cooper, of market analyst
Nielsen. “Flavoured gin is now bigger than lavoured
vodka.” Last year was all about pink-coloured
infusions, but Gemma tips orange, parma violet
and strawberry as the hot trends for 2019.

ORGANIC
WINE
The blossoming choice
of low- and no-alcohol
drinks may be winning
over new fans, but the rise and rise
of organic wine shows we still love
a tipple that’s good for mind, body
and soul. In fact, research
suggests we’re willing to
pay nearly 40% more
for a good bottle
of wine. Well
it’s all about
quality not
quantity,
hey guys?

COOL
START-UPS
We live in exciting
times for food and drink
innovation, with the new
wave of craft makers
gaining momentum all
the time. In fact, the
UK has just overtaken
Germany as the world’s
number one destination
for new vegan launches.
British rum is a market to
watch, with craft distillers
taking their cue from the
successes of gin, which
has seen numbers of indie
distilleries skyrocket in
recent years.

FAIR TRADING
Fairtrade Foundation,
the farmer-owned
certiication mark has
taken a battering in recent
years, with chocolate’s biggest brands lying
the nest to create their own sustainability
programmes (or ‘mark their own homework’,
as Divine’s CEO Sophi Tranchell would have it).
The Foundation is ighting back; its Fairtrace scheme,
rolling out this year, uses blockchain technology to
ensure more transparency. Meanwhile, Fair Vodka distilled
from quinoa, the world’s irst vodka to get a stamp of
approval from Fair Trade (a whole diferent certiication
board, keep up!), goes on sale in Waitrose this month.

WOKE TRAVEL
Eco tourism is nothing new,
but travel company G Adventures
has recently raised the bar with its ‘Ripple Score’,
measuring the true economic value a tour brings
to the communities it visits. Guilt-free getaways
are a step closer. Gadventures.co.uk

REWILDING
With climate experts at the UN
suggesting there are just 12 years left
to limit the efects of climate change,
momentum is building behind local
projects such as Summit to Sea in Mid-Wales,
which aim to restore ‘ecological functions’ of
former wildernesses. Learn more at
