n21July,New Zealand won the NetballWorld Cup with
adramatic 52-51 win against their big rivals Australia.
After beating England in the semi-finals the day before,
New Zealand went on to pick up the trophy for the fifth time.
England won bronzefor the thirdtime inarow.The
Roses, which is the England team’snickname, beat South
Africa58-42 in the third-placeplay-off.
New Zealand and Australia have playedeach other in
the NetballWorld Cup final in the past six tournaments,
and Australia boastsarecor d11World Cup final wins.
This year NewZealand got theirrevenge. Thecompetition,

which is held every four years,wasplayed in
Liverpool over 10 days. Therewere16countries
involved, including Barbados, Jamaica, Uganda
and Zimbabwe. Northern Ireland finished 10th
and Scotlandcame 11th.
Anetball team has seven players on thecourt at
any one time.Goalsare sc ored by shooting theball
thro ughthe goal ring.Players pass the ball butcan
only holditf or thre eseconds,and arenot allowed

Games will be held in
Birmingham, and netball will
be one of the 17 sports taking

Australia in the 2018 final.

in SouthKorea, the British swimmer
brokehis own worldrecordin the
100 metres breaststrokesemi-final.
Peaty,24, became the first person
to swim theracein less than
57 seconds. His new worldrecord
of 56.88 seconds beat his previous
recordof 57.10 seconds.Peaty went
on to win the final on 22 July,and
Britain’sJames Wilbycame second.
