orget learning the trade on ropey old
Mk4 Astras, students at Carshalton
College get to work on classic royalty.
Thanksto the efforts of longtime Ford fan,
SteveMiller, and technicians, Lee and Nigel,
students on the Entry Level 3 Diploma in
Motor Vehicle Industry and Technologies
course at the college spend every Wednesday
working on classic Fords as part of their
training — with the current subject being
Steve’s own Mk1 Escort project.
A Ford owner since the age of 14 when his
Dad bought him an Anglia to work on, Steve’s
had the keys to everything from Mk1 Cortinas
to Capris since, and when he started working at

Carshalton College fi ve years ago, he reasoned,
quite rightly, that it would be great to share this
enthusiasm with the students and help them get
more out of the various motor vehicle courses
that the college runs. The fi rst classic Ford they
cut their teeth on was Steve’s 1600E, but for
the last year-and-a-half they’ve been heavily
involved with the rebuild of his former 1100
Mk1 Escort, tackling everything on the car bar
the panelwork and paint.
Now with the Escort nearing completion,
the students are justifi ably proud of their work,
and keen to get stuck into the next project.
Turn the page to see what they got up to —
and what they’ve learnt.
