BEN SZANTO

MK1 CORTINA TURBO

With the keys to his existing Mk1 Cortina
claimed by son, Jozsef, Ben had no choice but
to build another to bring along to this year’s
show. Previously owned by Darren Miles and
put together as part of our four-day build
feature in the Summer 2016 issue, Ben
bought the car from Darren sans engine and
rather than drop in the usual Zetec, elected to
go for an 1800 from an MX-5, along with a
homebrewed turbo conversion. Much
fabrication and prep work ensued involving
late nights and plenty of help from mates, but
the Mk1 drove to and from the show.

OR BUST
How’s this for dedication? Angelo Pereira and
his wife Aida drive from the southern tip of
Portugal to join fellow Scorted club members
at the show — a round trip of some 3000 miles
in his Mk4 Escort Estate! No wonder we caught
cat-napping in the car in the afternoon!

Nothing like a mid-show alternator swap to keep you on your toes.

Mk1 Escort looks fast and furious. Sorry...

New look for Rob Maeer’s Mk2 Escort had many confused.

Yes, that’s a rear-mounted radiator!
