Classic Ford – August 2019

(sharon) #1
Any XR2 makes a sizzling backroad
companion. Introduced in 1981, the 1.6-litre
tearaway shot straight to the top of the
Fiesta range with stats like 84 bhp, a top
speed over 100 mph and 60 mph in under
10 seconds. It was enough to propel the
Ford to the top of its class but the real
magic happens in the corners. Firmed-up
dampers add an aggressive attitude, a
stout anti-roll bar keeps the handling in
check and 185-section Pirelli P6 tyres offer
remarkable grip for the era. Add a well-
reviewed gearshift and communicative
steering and you’ve got a hot hatch that
goads you into mile after twisting mile.

ROAD WARRIOR

RIGHT FROM THE START

every one of its clips have since been fitted to
the XR2.
Preserved and pristine, this Ford always turn
heads. “We went to the Scottish Car Show last
year and the public were obsessed,” Allan grins,
“even the traffic police were gobsmacked! One
officer told us they remembered chasing young
kids in them and didn’t think there were any
left...” The XR2 has won 19 trophies from 17
shows to date, with appearances at Waxstock and
the NEC Classic Motor Show planned for 2019.
Far more than the plaudits, Allan and Mick
value the XR2 for the shared experiences it
provides. Lewis senior bought the Fiesta in
response to his son’s health scare and never
plans to let it go. “It’s brought us a lot closer
together,” says Allan, “and I could never tell
Dad how much it means to me. It’s made our
bond even stronger; it’s incredible.” When
you’re maintaining perfection, two heads are
better than one.

Factory floored: the Lewis’ XR2 is pretty much exactly
is it would have driven off the line back in 1982.
