Imperial action on opium
A contemporary illustration shows the emperor’s commissioner Lin Zexu overseeing
the destruction of opium at Humen town on the Pearl river near the trading port of
Canton (now Guangzhou), south-east China, in June 1839. Having demanded that
British merchants hand over all stocks of the drug, Lin Zexu ordered his men to mix
the opium with lime and salt in wood-lined pits that were then flushed with sea water
