Uneasy alliance
An awkward-looking Adolf Hitler poses
alongside the more flamboyant Benito
Mussolini in Venice on 14 June 1934 during
a state visit – his first since being appointed
German chancellor in January 1933, and his
first meeting with the Italian Fascist. Hitler
had admired Mussolini’s earlier success in
seizing power but disliked having to share the
limelight with the egotistical, arrogant Italian
leader. Over time the relationship changed:
Hitler became the senior partner in the Axis
