A killer cut down
A French mounted policeman strikes Vlado
Chernozemski moments after the Bulgarian assassin
shot and killed the Yugoslav king Alexander I on
9 October 1934. The king was beginning a state visit
in Marseilles when Chernozemski, a member of the
Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organisation,
shot him; the Bulgarian was immediately attacked
by the crowd, who (according to reports) beat him
to death. The French foreign minister Jean-Louis
Barthou was also killed in the assassination.
