Bolívar’s army sets off west
from Mantecal, Venezuela,
towards the border with New
Granada (now Colombia)

3 June 1819
Having marched through the
waterlogged Venezuelan
plains to reach Guasdualito,
Bolívar discloses his true
intention: to cross the Andes

4 June 1819
The army crosses the Arauca
river, entering the province
of Casanare in New Granada;
they rest for four days at
General Santander’s station
in Tame from 11 June

22 June 1819
After nearly a month in the
plains, Bolívar’s troops
reach the foothills of the
Andes at Pore before
beginning the arduous ascent
into the high mountains

3-6 July 1819
The exhausted troops
cross the freezing
Pisba plateau, where
perhaps 50 British
legionaries die of
exposure and
exhaustion

25 July 1819
Having descended the western
side of the cordillera, Bolívar
wins the first pitched battle of the
campaign for New Granada at
Vargas swamp

7 August 1819
The patriots defeat royalist
forces at the Boyacá
Bridge, leaving open the
road to Bogotá

10 August 1819
Bolívar enters Bogotá,
capital of New
Granada, winning the
epithet ‘El Libertador’
