Mystery of Scots

killer whale pod

The identity of a group of nine killer
whales spotted off Scotland’s west
coast last year remains a mystery
despite extensive research and a flurry
of sightings in the Hebrides recently.
Encountered during the Hebridean
Whale and Dolphin Trust’s annual
marine research expeditions, the
unidentified killer whales – which
included two large males and two
juveniles – were seen just 300m (985ft)
from the charity’s research yacht,
Silurian, last June.
The trust hopes to encounter the
pod again during its surveys this year.
The animals were observed for 30
minutes, with one male swimming
over to Silurian to have a closer look.
Despite collaborating with other
organisations to identify the animals,
the pod remains an enigma,
suggesting the animals may belong
to a wider offshore population that
roams the Scottish seas.
