Malan tears

Surrey apart

Captain Dawid Malan scored his
third T20 hundred as Middlesex
made it two wins out of two in the
Vitality Blast South Group with a
37-run victory over Surrey at the
Kia Oval.
Malan’s 117 off 57 balls was the
cornerstone of Middlesex’s 209 for
three, with a bumper crowd of
23,708 giving him a standing ova-
tion for an innings that boasted
seven sixes and 11 fours.
The England batsman put on 55
with Steve Eskinazi in the power-
play, which included hitting vet-
eran off-spinner Gareth Batty for 22
in one over. In total, the pair plun-
dered 131 from 11 overs.
Surrey were up against it as soon
as Tom Helm claimed the key
wicket of Aaron Finch, leaving
them 21 for two. Ollie Pope made 47
but, with Ben Foakes out injured,
Surrey looked a batsman short.
They finished on 172 for nine.

Scott receives death threats after snub

By Daniel Schofield

British swimmer Duncan Scott has

been the subject of death threats on

social media after refusing to shake

hands with China’s Sun Yang after

the 200 metres freestyle medal

ceremony at the World Champion-

ships in South Korea.

In an echo of the protest by Mack

Horton, who did not take his place

on the podium for Sun’s victory in

the 400m freestyle on Sunday,

Scott refused to pose for pictures or

shake hands with Sun, who reacted

angrily. He shouted at Scott from

the podium and then wagged a fin-

ger in his face on their way back

from the pool, appearing to say:

“You’re a loser. I’m a winner.”

Sun, who was booed by the crowd

in Gwangju, served a three-month

ban in 2014 after testing positive for

trimetazidine, which led to Horton

calling him a “drug cheat” at the

2016 Rio Olympics. He is also sub-

ject to an appeal by the World Anti-

Doping Agency at the Court of

Arbitration for Sport, which could

result in a lifetime ban. He was ini-

tially cleared by Fina, the sport’s

governing body, on a technicality

after a confrontation with doping

testers led to a vial of his blood

being smashed with a hammer.

Scott, who finished joint third,

has received hundreds of abusive

messages, including Photoshopped

images of his head in a hangman’s

noose, as well as threats to his fam-

ily. After the race he was unrepent-

ant at adding fuel to the fire. “I’m

Team Mack,” Scott told the BBC. “If

[Sun] can’t respect our sport then

why should I respect him? I think a

lot of people, everyone in swim-
ming, got behind what Mack did.”
Sun is the first Chinese male
swimmer to win an Olympic gold
medal and thousands of Chinese
social media users have bypassed
their own nation’s firewall to abuse
those critical of their golden boy.
Adam Peaty, who won gold for
Britain in the 100m breaststroke,

has found his social media accounts
inundated with abuse after speak-
ing out about Sun’s presence at the
championships yesterday.
“He should be asking himself,
should he really be in sport when
the people were booing him?” Peaty
said. “As a sportsperson you have
the right to a voice and Duncan
showed his and so did the crowd. If
the fans aren’t wanting him [Sun], I
don’t know why he’s here.”
Nor was the race itself without
controversy. Lithuania’s Danas Ra-

psys finished first, but was disquali-
fied for twitching on his starting
block. Sun was promoted to first
and reacted by goading the crowd.
Scott, 22, had finished joint fourth
with Russia’s Martin Malyutin and
was promoted to the podium,
where he stood for the anthems, be-
fore stepping down. He congratu-
lated Katsuhiro Matsumoto, of
Japan, who finished second, and
Malyutin, but blanked Sun.

Dart’s victim

is suspended

Beatriz Haddad Maia, the Brazilian
who lost to Britain’s Harriet Dart in
the second round at Wimbledon,
has been provisionally suspended
following a positive drug test.
The International Tennis Federa-
tion announced last night that
Haddad Maia, after being tested on
June 4 at the Croatia Bol Open,
returned a sample containing a
banned anabolic agent.
Haddad Maia, the 23-year-old
world No 99 who defeated former
Wimbledon champion Garbine
Muguruza in the first round of the
tournament, was charged on July 12

  • eight days after losing to Dart.
