■ Way back in the 1950s,
I remember my nan
would be talking to a
neighbour and, as a child,
I’d tug on her pinny and
ask for a penny to buy
sweets.
She would point at me
and say interrupting or
shouting at someone
who was talking was the
“height of ignorance and
bad manners”.
I now watch the
leaders of this country
on TV and remember
what my nan said.
This country is going
to the dogs because they
all constantly interrupt
and never listen.

Prescot, Merseyside
■ Getting money from
cash machines shouldn’t
cost anything at all
(Mirror, July 22).
Paying to access your
own money is bordering
on the obscene.
I usually use super-
market ATMs, which are
free, or get cashback on
my shopping.
It’s better for the
stores as they have less
cash to pay in at the end
of the day.
David Marsden
Bridlington, East Yorks

■ Your photo of the
elephant butchered by
ivory hunters was one of
the most upsetting
images I have ever seen
(Mirror, July 19).
This beautiful animal
being hacked to bits so
that its ivory could be
made into trinkets made
me so angry.
Humans and their
greed are ruining
everything on this planet.

tion that would result in a victory for
the Conservatives at a time when
Labour are still infighting over anti-
Semitism allegations and Europe.
It worked for Thatcher.
Phil Brand, South West London
■ As well as showing how weak
Britain has become militarily, the
seizing of the British oil tanker by
Iran exposes how dependent we
remain on Middle Eastern oil.
The sooner we can make Britain
self-sufficient via renewable energy
the better. It’s pathetic that we are
hostages to despotic regimes in
order to keep our cars on the road.
Brett Grainger, Rugeley, Staffs

■ The Government is slow in
picking up potential problems with
Iran. After holding a tanker thought
to be heading to Syria, what did they
expect? The tragedy is with our tiny
fleet, we can’t protect our own
shores from smugglers or unwanted
guests, never mind cover events
overseas. Once we were a great and
respected power, but sadly today
we’re a laughing stock.
Guy Middlewood
Driffield, East Yorks
■ Well done to the Tories. We now
have a navy the size of a developing
country’s and are unable to protect
our shipping. This is a direct result
of Tory cuts to the Armed Forces
to save money. Now we have to
build up the Navy again at a cost
of billions.
Anthony Howard
Salford, Gtr Manchester
■ Following the Tories disas-
trous defence review when they
took office in 2010, it has taken
them nine years to realise the
Royal Navy has been cut to the
bone. If anyone in government
knew anything of history, they
would understand how vital it
is for a small island such as
Britain to have a strong navy.
KD Thornhill
South East London

Tory cuts sank

our proud navy

■ It’s a frightening state of affairs
when a Defence Minister admits the
UK simply does not have sufficient
naval and military resources to
defend shipping from attacks by
hostile forces amid tension with Iran
over its seizure of a UK-flagged oil
tanker (Mirror, July 22).
Surely the first duty of any govern-
ment is to ensure the safety of its
citizens and failure to do so is
nothing less than a betrayal of the
people? In an uncertain world, all
political parties must commit to
investing in our Armed Forces as a
priority. The Royal Navy was once
the envy of the world and must be
restored to this position.
Keeley-Jasmine Cavendish
South East London
■ It’s interesting that amid this crisis
with Iran, the Royal Navy will now
patrol the Strait of Hormuz with our
European allies after the Americans
turned down our request for help
(Mirror, July 23). What does this say
about the so-called ‘special relation-
ship’ and post-Brexit trade deals
with Trump?
Another point is that this inci-
dent has exposed the scale of the
Tory defence cuts which has
left the Navy unable to police
our shipping effectively.
Once again, this inept
Tory Government has
been found wanting.
J Barratt
Barnsley, South Yorks
■ What concerns me is
that the recent Iranian
seizure of a UK-flagged
tanker could be used as a
‘Falklands factor’ for Boris
Johnson as Prime Minister.
He could call a snap elec-

Defence Secretary Jeremy Hunt revealed
that Britain will join a European task force to
patrol the Strait of Hormuz after Iran seized a
UK-flagged tanker on Friday. This follows a
minister’s admission that the Royal Navy has too
few vessels to keep our shipping safe. You say...

Yes. I like the idea. Motsi
will add a new dynamic
and also some much
needed diversity to the
judging panel.
S CHRISTIE

Yes. It’ll be good to get
someone new with
experience as both a
dancer and a judge.
CHARLOTTE MCGEE

No. It should’ve been
Anton du Beke – he’d
have been fabulous!
SUSAN CRAWLEY

Yes. If Motsi has experience
elsewhere, that’s good. I
also think Anton should be
in Claudia or Tess’s role.
JAYKE1981

No. It’s not fair. It
should be someone
who isn’t related to
any of the dancers.

Strictly star Oti Mabuse’s older sister Motsi –

Is Motsi a good

choice to replace

Darcey?

No. Very disappointing.
I’d have loved
Brendan Cole – the
show hasn’t been the
same since he left.

PET OF THE WEEK

Please say hello to my gorgeous cat Lucy. She is so
eager to welcome us home from work that she gets
into the car. We think Lucy is about 15, but don’t
know for sure because she adopted us by camping
in our garden. She’s such a beautiful and loving cat...
I’m so pleased she decided to stay with us.
