joker will be unmasked as a
fraud at PMQs.
George Walden, former
diplomat and Tory MP, says
smirking, egomaniacal amateur
Johnson, “can never be a
serious person and the country
he will lead will not be taken
seriously either”.
Johnson’s character was
formed behind the bike sheds of
that most famous of public
schools, not on its playing fields.
He is not a team player. He is
the court jester – a politician
willing to shut down the House
of Commons if he can’t get his
way over Brexit.
His victory will be put to the
test in next week’s by-election in
mid-Wales. The process of
discovery that the emperor has
no clothes begins now.

now time for the North to get its
fair share. But transport alone is
not the silver bullet.
The Industrial Revolution
started here in the North and
we can lead the tech revolution.
But this won’t happen without
more local control over skills
and training.
As Mayors, we represent a
population the same size as
Scotland’s. The North as a
whole is 15.5 million-strong.
We are now beginning to
speak with one voice and we’re
only going to get louder.

BORIS Johnson will run the
country as he campaigned to
win the leadership – flying by
the seat of his pants – if he is
able to hold them up.
They’re usually round his
ankles and that’s where the
country is heading with the
Eton Mess in No10.
He comes to power without a
credible programme for
government – indeed, a
complete disdain for
planning for the
future.
He takes over at
a time of
international crisis
after Iran’s seizure of a
British oil tanker – having
already enraged the
mullahs in Tehran.
His gaffe-prone appearances
as Foreign Secretary are the
shape of things to come. The

Time for Boris to deliver

for North at third asking

BORIS Johnson’s Government
will be the third administration
to promise the North of England
a Northern Powerhouse.
He is not known for his love of
the North, so people will be
sceptical of his commitment.
There has never been a
greater need to rebalance the
economy outside of London and
give the North the power and
resources to fire on all cylinders.
The North has been held back
for too long by our congested
roads and clapped-out trains.
Boris Johnson knows all too
well one of the key ingredients
to London’s success: that you
can catch a train, bus or Tube
without paying a fortune. After
50 years and billions of pounds
of investment in the capital, it’s
