Scott calls for more swimmers to

turning to square up to the Brit, yelling
in his face: “You’re a loser! I win, yeah?”
On Sunday, Australian Mack Horton
was warned by governing body FINA
after refusing to step on to the podium
to collect his silver after being beaten
by Sun in the men’s 200m freestyle final.
In a letter to Horton, the body said:
“While FINA respects the principle of
freedom of speech, athletes should not
use FINA events to
make personal
statements or gestures”.
In 2014, Sun served a
three-month ban for
stimulant abuse and
claims he was involved
in the smashing of a
dope-test sample last
year are to be heard by
the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
“I’m Team Mack,” said Scott, after his
own protest. “If Sun can’t respect our
sport, then why should I respect him? I
think a lot of people – everyone in
swimming – got behind what Mack did.
“Hopefully, this will happen in more
events.”
Sun goes again in the 800m freestyle
final tonight and is due to be involved
in the relays later this week. Tonight will
also feature Britain’s Adam Peaty going
for gold in the 50m breaststroke final.
BY MATTHEW DUNN
DUNCAN SCOTT has urged more
swimmers to snub China’s
drug-cheat gold medallist Sun Yang
after the pair had a blazing row at
their medal ceremony.
British bronze medallist Scott, 22, had
finished joint-fourth with Martin
Malyutin in the World Championships
200m freestyle.
But Scott was pro-
moted, alongside the
Russian, to a medal
position when Danas
Rapsys, initially
declared the winner,
was disqualified for a
false start.
That decision gave
Sun his second gold of
the meeting, but, as he celebrated in his
lane, he was booed by the South Korean
crowd.
Then, at the medal ceremony, when
his name was called to take his gold
medal, Sun shouted at Scott.
The Brit had already collected bronze,
shaking his fist in Sun’s direction and
appearing to say: “I am clean.”
Scott then refused to shake his hand
and walked off the podium.
Sun again reacted, waving his fingers
at Scott (above) as he passed, before
