Japanese names
Japan’s foreign minister, Taro Kono, is planning to ask the foreign media to use
the family name first when writing Japanese names, as is customary in the Japa-
nese language. He brought up the topic for the first time in the end of May, when
he revealed that the country’s prime minister had been wrongly identified as
“Shinzo Abe” instead of “Abe Shinzo” by international media organisations since
he first took office 13 years ago. Japanese names are customarily written with the
family name first and the given name second, but in English they are written in
the reverse.

Immigrant mayor
Octavian Ursu, a 51-year-old Romanian
immigrant and classical trumpeter, has
been elected mayor of Goerlitz, a small
town in eastern Germany. The CDU
candidate teamed up with the Greens and
the Left party (who agreed to withdraw
their candidates and support him) to beat
the far-right AfD candidate, Sebastian
Wippel, in a tight second-round. With only
44.9% of the vote, the AfD lost its first
mayoral contest.

Cat filter
Last month, Shaukat
Yousafzai, a Pakistani
veteran journalist and
politician member of the PTI
party, held a live stream
press conference that turned
into farce. He was giving a
briefing to reporters in
Peshawar - the event was
streamed live on Facebook -
when a member of his social
media team inadvertently
switched on the cat filter.
Unaware of it, the politician
carried on with superimposed pink ears and whiskers on his face. The video was deleted minutes
after the press conference, which didn’t prevent Party followers from posting jokes about
the blunder.

Avocado frenzy
In the Mexican state of Michoacán,
organized crime groups have a new target
of choice: avocado trucks. Up to four trucks
carrying avocados are now stolen every day.
These violent groups are taking advantage
of American consumers’ seemingly
insatiable appetite for the fruit, as 80% of
US avocado imports come from Michoacán.
