Scotland as you
have never seen it
In our summer issue of Vocable, we take you on a
voyage to Scotland – to areas well off the beaten
track. We discover its northernmost region: the
Shetland Isles. This is a group of about 100 islands
of which only fifteen are inhabited. This wild
paradise with more sheep and birds species than
people, invites you to a real communion with
nature: spectacular cliffs, crystal clear water,
deserted beaches and colonies of rare birds. His-
tory buffs will also be pleased as the archipelago
is rich in well-preserved archeological sites and
Viking farms. The artisanal wool industry of
Shetland is one of the last remaining vestiges
of the Scottish textile industry. Every year in
September, the islands play host to the Wool
Week festival, an absolute must for knitting fans.
We also focus on another part of the country, as
yet free from the tourist hordes: the south-west,
and in particular, the region of Dumfries &
Galloway and Ayrshire, territory of Scot’s poet,
Robert Burns. This time in the southernmost
part of Scotland, the Mull of Galloway – and
its famous lighthouse – awaits you. It features
stretches of beautiful green countryside, pep-
pered with spectacular chateaux; now accessible
thanks to the panoramic ‘South West Coastal
300’. The legendary hospitality of the Scots, their
rich folklore and famous whisky will no doubt
win you over.
The team at Vocable wish you a wonderful sum-
mer and see you on 5 September for the next
edition.
