The Shetland Islands: beautiful scenery and a traditional wool industry
The Scottish archipelago of Shetland is made up of about 100 islands of which only fifteen are inhabited. Located halfway
between mainland Scotland and Norway, this wild and windswept landscape has breathtaking scenery, an incredible variety of
fauna and very well preserved archaeological sites. It is also host to a world-renowned festival of wool every September. Portait
of an island culture with something for everyone.
THE NEW YORK TIMES NELLIE HERMANN
New research indicates that some of
Scotland’s nearly 600 crannogs (artificial
islands) are far older than scientists originally
thought. Some may have been built more
than 5,300 years ago, during the Neolithic epoch.
Sumburgh Head is located at the southern tip of mainland Shetland. (Istock)
