TRAVEL 9/2019 Spotlight 35
podcast called Psychic Sauna, for which
she would broadcast from saunas all
over the world. While you sweat, a nice
man named Victor comes around to ask
if you want any treatments; you can get
a massage, a Dead Sea mud mask, or the
“platza,” the house specialty. You ask for
the last, and the guy comes back when
he’s ready for you. You’re taken into a pri-
vate booth and you remove your top and
lie down on a table.
He pours warm water on you with
a hose and thrashes you gently with a
bunch of oak leaves, oils you up, scrubs
you with the oak leaves, and rinses your
back off. Then you turn over and he does
the other side. Victor leaves you to put
your top back on, and another attendant
comes, asks if you’re OK, and then takes
you into an ice-cold shower stall, where
he spins you around as water blasts you
from all directions. Finally, you can go into
the 46 °F (8 °C) pool, chilling yourself to
the core. At the end of your session at the
baths, every molecule of your body feels
reborn. Maybe it’s time for some blini, and
then back out into the city, every inch of it
ticking into the future.
