W

hen A-listers like Halle Berry,
Kate Beckinsale and Jennifer
Lopez want to get in shape for
their latest
Hollywood role there’s
one man they call –
Gunnar Peterson.
He’s the Beverly
Hills personal trainer
who’s also responsible
for helping Khloé
Kardashian get her
‘revenge body,’
Matthew McConaughey
hone his glorious pecs
and Dakota Johnson
shape up for the Fifty
Shades films.
Last month Gunnar
joined Chris Hemsworth
and his wife Elsa Pataky’s
Centr team to offer a
new fitness programme,

Gunnar x Centr, which went down a
storm in Tinseltown and pretty much
everywhere else too. As well as advising
celebrities and
athletes, including the
Los Angeles Lakers
basketball team,
Gunnar owns a private
gym in Beverly Hills
frequented by the
A-list. The motivating
motto emblazoned
on the wall of his
gym? ‘Don’t show
up late, don’t try to
get out early, don’t
cheat your rep counts
and definitely don’t
hold back.’
We find out how
this sports guru is
on a mission to get
everyone fit...

WHATEXERCISEISBEST
FORTONING?
According to Gunnar: ‘To look toned you need to
burn excess subcutaneous body fat (found under
the skin rather than around the organs). I would go
for a higher intensity cardiovascular workout which
includes sprints. That could be a spinning class with
sprints, a boot camp, a rowing class, or a climber
class. Any exercise where there are bursts of higher
intensity effort coupled with less intensive exercise
would work. You can also do strength training to burn
excess body fat.’

WHYHIIT
WORKOUTS?
Gunnar’s fitness
programmes
always incorporate
HIIT training
i.e short, sharp
workouts. He says:
‘People haven’t
got much time
and they don’t
know whether they
should be doing
cardio or strength
training during
a workout. That
means, a lot of the
time they end up
doing nothing.’
He adds: ‘If
you can do some
resistance training
and strength
work at a pace
that serves your
cardiovascular
demands it’s like
a two-in-one
workout. You’ll up
your heart rate and
hit all the major
muscle groups – so
you’re going to
be a better, fitter
person for it.’

ISNUTRITIONORFITNESS
MOREIMPORTANT?
Both need to be considered but Gunnar urges
us to focus on fitness first. He explains: ‘The role
of nutrition becomes more important the closer
you get to your goal. So, if you’re just starting
to fit some exercise into your schedule get
the workouts sorted to begin with. See how it
works for you, how it changes you. Then start to
gradually focus more on your diet. Don’t switch
from all processed foods to all natural, organic
foods quickly either, do it slowly. This is all about
your long-term lifestyle.’
