HEALTH&FITNESS

For Gunnar it’s all
about balance –
nut butter and wine
are on the menu
but so is plenty
of protein and
vegetables:

t ‘Every morning
when I wake up,
I have nut butter and jam.
I have that very early in the
morning so I’m not working on
an empty stomach.’
t ‘Post workout I have a
protein shake and then about
half an hour later I have some
kind of a breakfast which
will include some protein,

carbohydrates
and fat.’
t ‘I’ll probably
have a snack
midday which
could be anything.
The wheels could
come off there
and I could end up
eating something
unhealthy, so I try to bring
something into work with me.’
t ‘For dinner, I eat a lot of
vegetables and always have
one glass of wine.’OK!

INTERVIEW BY EMILY WHITWAM

How do you keep in shape?
Well (she says while having a
cup of tea and a biscuit), I try to
go to the gym about four times
a week. My mum used to say:
‘If you’ve got time to chat on
the phone for an hour, you’ve
got time to go to the gym.’
And I try not to eat carbs.

Does not eating carbs slow
you down?
Not really, as I eat a lot of
chicken, salads and fruit. I don’t
miss carbs; they bloat me.

What’s your
gym routine?
I’m good at
planks. I do
core work,
sit-ups, squats
and weights on
my arms. I do
a routine, but
I whip through
it. I don’t
like running, because
Madonna once said you
do get a ‘jogger’s face’,
so I was like: ‘Right, I’m
not doing it.’

What’s your
ideal meal?
I love a
Chinese or a
curry at the
weekend.
It’s my
naughty treat.
I do lots of work
for the British Curry
Awards, because I
love curry so much!

Does being in the
public eye put pressure
on how you look?
I’ve always been aware
of how I look and what I
eat, because my mother
was a really glamorous as
a model. I used to watch
her get ready and put her
lipstick on. I’d never be
one of those people that
wouldn’t bother.

Are your sons both
into fitness?
My youngest is on trial
at West Ham, so he’s

very fit. And my eldest boy
is just a slim Jim. He can eat
anything and stay slim. They’re
both quite into fitness. Don’t
forget their dad played for
Chelsea – it’s bred in them.

What would you say is your
favourite part of your body?
My legs, because I’ve earned
the most money from them!
On film, I was a leg double. I
wish I could say my face, but
it’s not. I have got a very short
body. At school, they called
me ‘no-body’.

Do you
feel body
confident?
Yeah. I feel
fitter than I did
in my twenties.
But when you
get to a certain
age things start
to drop and
you’ve got to work that
little bit harder.

Who is your fitness
inspiration?
Elle Macpherson,
because she’s
strong and
athletic, not
a skinny
Minnie.

Who is your
favourite pal
for a dinner date?
Bruno Tonioli - we
go out to eat all
the time. And he
makes amazing
chicken dishes for
me and my boys.

How did your
friends feel about
being in your
book, Tales From
The Red Carpet?
There are a few
people that said:
‘Please don’t put me
in the book.’ There
are a few big names
in there including
Tom Cruise. It’s got
lots of funny tales
from A-listers.

WHATIFYOUONLYHAVEMINUTES?
We all need to become like A-listers in our approach to exercise by
making time for ourselves when possible.
Gunnar explains: ‘Celebrities have busy diaries pulling them in so
many directions. So they create openings in their schedule to get to
the gym, get results, and get out fast. The training they do in the gym
is efficient. At my gym we don’t do much training in isolation; we do
exercises with big body movements that increase your metabolic rate
and strip body fat.’
If you’re not near a gym or are very short on time, even a brisk
walk can help you shape up. But as Gunnar says: ‘You need to push
yourself, it’s not going to come easy.’
