ENERGY BOOSTER

James Collins, performance
nutritionist, has worked with
Arsenal FC and the England
football squad. Here’s how
he beats sugar spikes and
maximises a workout.

Space out your protein
It was once assumed that
taking on protein immediately
after training was a priority,
but it’s now accepted that
you can consume it within
24 hours afterwards. And
it doesn’t need to come in
a single dose, either. A
recent study suggests muscles
use protein more effectively
if it comes in small doses
throughout the day – as
snacks rather than one portion.

Drink coffee strategically
For optimal performance,
caffeine should be consumed
around 45 to 60 minutes
before training in order
for levels to peak in the
blood. But try to drink it
strategically, not habitually
during the day. And a
large cup from your high-
street cafe chain isn’t
always required; you can
get just as much benefit
from something with a lower
caffeine content, such as an
English breakfast blend or
other kinds of caffeinated tea.

Avoid a sugar crash
Eating meals at irregular
times, skipping them or
eating meals based on
high-GI carbohydrates or
sugary snacks can cause
big swings in blood glucose
which, as well as affecting
energy levels, also affects
mood. The elevation in blood
glucose from high-GI diets
with refined carbohydrates
is linked to increased anxiety
and symptoms of depression.
Consuming meals with lower
GI carbs such as grains,
legumes and vegetables,
and eating at regular times,
will reduce sugar spikes.
