hile many viewers breathed a

sigh of relief when Love Island’s

Amber Gill chose to recouple

with Greg O’Shea last week,

no one was more pleased than her best

friend Mart Tweedy.

‘I was over the moon!’ says Mart of the

moment Amber, 21, chose rugby player Greg

over firefighter Michael Griffiths. ‘Greg is

exactly the type of person Amber would go

for. I think Michael was just desperate to stay

in the game. He burnt his bridges.’

Mart has known beauty therapist Amber

for four years after meeting her at former

Love Island contestant Adam Collard’s gym

in Newcastle.

Here, he tells OK! his thoughts on Greg, the

reason he and Michael will never be friends

and why Amber doubts her self-worth...

Amber seems to question a lot of what

people say to her. Why is she like that?

She’s always been like that. When she told me

she was going on Love Island I said: ‘You’re

going to win this.’ And she said: ‘Why?’ She

wants to know the ins and outs of everything.

She’s very self-doubting. Even though she

has a confident exterior, she really doubts

her self-worth.

Why is that?

I think it’s because of

how she’s been treated

in the past. Every partner

that she’s been with bar

one has cheated on her.

I think that’s why she

was frosty initially and

she had a barrier up. She

was using her sarcastic

Geordie humour

as protection.

What will it take for Amber to let her

guard down?

For someone to treat her well and be a

gentleman, like Greg has been. And for

someone not to mess her around. Basically

not doing what Michael was doing by telling

her one thing and doing another and then

treating her like c**p and then wanting her

back. I think Michael only wanted her back

because he saw her laughing and happy with

Greg. He was jealous.

How did you feel when Amber chose to

recouple with Greg?

I was so happy! He’s such a gentleman. The

way she is with Greg reminds me of what she

was like with Michael initially. He’s Irish with

muscles, what’s not to like? It would have

been difficult for Amber to build trust with

Michael. I think it would have brought back

memories of when she was hurt in the past.

Do Amber’s parents like Greg?

Yes, her mum thinks he’s a really nice guy.

We’re really impressed with him so far. He’s

exactly the type of person Amber would go

for. They have the same humour and he gets

her banter, which is what she needs.

Are you angry at Michael for how he

treated her?

Yeah. If we

crossed paths

I’d be civil with

him but we’re

never going

to be friends

because of how

he’s treated

her. I think all

her family and

friends think

that, too. He’s

made her cry so

many times and

it’s awful to watch.

Does she get

emotional over

boys usually?

Not really. The

only time she gets

emotional is when

it’s coming to the end of the relationship.

She’s a strong person. It’s very rare that she

would get this upset, which is why it was so

devastating for us to watch because we all

knew how down she must have been.

Would you have been disappointed in her

if she’d chosen Michael?

Not disappointed, as it’s different for her,

being in there, but I’m glad she didn’t

recouple with Michael. He wouldn’t have said

anything if Joanna [Chimonides] was still in

there, I think he just says what people want

to hear and likes to keep people on his side.

I think he was desperate to stay in the game.

He was playing Amber and Joanna against

each other. I felt really sorry for Amber.

Could there be anything

between Amber and

Michael in the future?

I don’t think so. He
