Scale Military Modeller International – August 2019

(coco) #1
periscopes were painted with several
coats of acrylic varnish.
Now it was time to paint the
tarpaulins, stowage, sandbags, machine
gun and main gun canvas cover. First
these get their base coats in acrylic
then I used a wash of either spirit and a
darker colour from oils or a darker acrylic
thinned with water and acrylic glaze.
Once dry, a very light dry brushing with
soft brushes is carried out building up
the colours. The straps are picked out
in oils and the shadows with water
colours. Oils were again mixed to match
the vehicle and items such as handles,
bolts and hinges picked out. Engine Oil
and Grease Oil from the Abteilung 502
ranges was now brushed around the
fuel iller caps and the engine access
panels and blended after a short period
of drying with White Spirit.

To bring the whole kit together,
I now painted the tow rope in dark
grey, washed it in a sand wash and
highlighted it with a graphite
pencil. The recognition
panel which I’d painted
separately was now
glued over this. The
lower hull was now
brushed with
PVA glue and

onto this various dark then lighter sand
shades dabbed in. A wash of these was
made from water and painted onto
the tracks. When dry it was removed
from the track pads with a soft sponge.
More pigment was applied around
the hatches and blended in with spirit.
Black pigment was applied to the rear
hull and main armament. Wilder Murky
Water was painted into the wheels
and more pigment added this dry
to look damp which was the efect I
was after. I also did this to areas of the
lower hull. The graphite pencil came in
handy again on the tracks and on the
.50 cal barrel. Well that was the M
pretty much done. All I had to do now
was to add all of the spare items I had
assembled and painted separately.
These I think have really brought her to
life. The igures are from Paracel and
after a little bit of a clean up came
out pretty well I believe. There’s also
a radio, cooler bag, cans of pop and
a bear. Although an old kit and
she did need a fair bit of work
on her to bring her up to
standard, but I really
enjoyed the build and
painting even more!
