Model Aircraft – August 2019

lines. This was also streaked over the airframe
from top to bottom, to simulate general dirt and
grime, after being left to the elements. Coming
to the end of this phase, I decided not to use
the trolley provided. Instead I made a makeshift
transportation crate, again gaining inspiration
from old pictures. This was made using cofee
stirring sticks, thanks to my local cofee shop!
Once I was happy, I painted the wooden sticks
(ironically, having to paint wood to look like
wood!) by starting of with a light brown, then

adding a darker brown wash. Finally, a dry brush
with a lightened shade of the base colour. This
worked really well, as it bought out the natural
grain. But there was still something missing. I
decided that I wanted to drape some old netting
over parts of the abandoned aircraft. This was
done by raiding an old irst aid box and cutting
up some pieces of old bandages, and they looked
perfectly in scale!
I then soaked the bandages in a mix of
thinned green acrylic paint and left them

to dry. The bandages were then soaked in a
50:50 mix of water and PVA glue, and then
draped over the model. It was actually quite
tricky to get the netting to fall naturally, but
persistence paid of, and the whole thing was
left to dry. Final weathering commenced with
some Tamiya Smoke being carefully sprayed
in recesses of the netting to further accentuate
the look of the shadows, thus giving it a more
three-dimensional efect. Also highly thinned
Tamiya Tan and Matt was sprayed all over the
upper surfaces, including the canopy to give it
an overall dusty grimy look. A inal coat of the
superb Hataka Matt uniied everything, bringing
the build to an end.
I had a blast with this little project. Apart
from the scratch building and weathering,
it was equally as much fun researching and
gaining inspiration for this build. Finally, a big
thanks to MAMs Assistant Editor Jezz Coleman
for taking the fantastic pictures that accompany
this article. MA
