That said, I did however, leave more dirt on
the undersides. Once happy with the result I
let the wash dry for a week or so, as oil paint
takes a lot of time to completely cure! Once
dry a general coat of X-Gloss was applied
ready for the decals. The decals where very
good, well printed and easy to apply. To
begin I removed as much of the carrier ilm
as I with a brand new blade and a metal
ruler. The perfectly shiny surface helped,
and it was really easy to apply the decals!
When dry I covered them with another coat
of gloss and then applied the same oil wash
used before, but this time in a much more
controlled way, and only to ill the panel lines
over the decals! Next, I used AK Interactive
AK 025, Fuel Stains, AK 082 Engine Grime and
AK084 Engine Oil to simulate all the fuel
and lubricant leaks. Using these products
thinned and applying them with a ine

brush I followed what I could see in my
reference photographs! Next some pigments
were used to simulate more dirt, and to add
some texture. The main landing gear was
then painted with Gunze H11 and once more
weathered with a Tamiya Panel Line wash.
With all parts in place I applied a inal coat of
Matt ready for the inal phase of painting.
The metallic parts of the exhaust (the ones
included on the fuselage parts) were brush

painted using Tamiya X-11
Silver, and once dry I applied a coat of
X-19 to remove some brightness and to give it
a more realistic look. The exhaust nozzles were
painted with white on their interiors and then
weathered with black to simulate the burnt
metal. On the exterior I used Alclad Aluminium
and Dark Aluminium, followed with the X-19
Tamiya Smoke to inish. The canopy had an
annoying mould line that need to be removed!
So here I used a 1000 grit sanding stick and
worked my way up, inishing with
some Tamiya Polishing Compound
to give it the perfect inish! With that
done it was time to put the already
painted ejection seats in place, and add
the inished canopy. This project was a
delight from start to inish and I just love
these amazing US Navy birds! MA
