Britain at War – August 2019

(vip2019) #1
Our D-Day 75th anniversary special tells
the story behind Operation Overlord, the
greatest amphibious invasion in history
which saw Allied forces land on the
beaches of Normandy in huge numbers
on 6 June 1944 in the war against
Hitler’s Germany. The story of the Allied
landings has been told many times, but
the great success of Operation Overlord
was only made possible because of
immensely detailed planning and
preparation.

Features include:

DISASTER AT DIEPPE
As demands grew from all sides for Britain
to take the offensive in Western Europe,
Britain’s Chiefs of Staff had to accede to
mounting an amphibious operation across
the English Channel – with calamitous
consequences.

OPERATION FORTITUDE
For Overlord to succeed, surprise was vital.
Even though the Germans knew that the
Allies were coming, they were completely
deceived about where thanks to a series of
elaborate deceptions.

STORMING THE BEACHES
With men of the airborne forces having
already set foot in Occupied France,
Hitler’s Fortress Europe was about to be
assailed from the sea.

BREAKOUT FROM THE BEACHHEAD
Having established a foothold in Normandy,
the Allied forces now had to break out from
the beaches.
