42 MODEL AIRPLANE INTERNATIONAL - August 2019
KIT BUILD
instructions for the following versions:
● Supermarine Spitfi re FR Mk.XIV - Aircraft
fl own by Squadron Leader James Bernard
Prendergast, No. 414 Squadron, RCAF, B156
Lüneburg, Germany, May-June 1945.
● Supermarine Spitfi re FR Mk.XIV - No.
11(AC) Squadron, RAF, Second Tactical Air
Force (2TAF), RAF Bückeburg, Germany,
1950-51.
Having built what seems like an endless
procession of camoufl aged RAF aircraft of
late, I chose to tackle the painted aluminium
11 Squadron aircraft. Though rather bland in
comparison to its camoufl aged companion,
there is no doubt the Spitfi re suits an overall
colour where there is nothing to break up its
wonderful shape and that was certainly the
case here. Add to that the fact that I’d never
built a Spitfi re in this colour so it would contrast
well with all of my other 1:48 builds, and it
seemed like a perfect choice! ■
Cockpit complete and in place.
Rivet detail was added with an RB Productions Rivet R, each
row being added freehand.
The airframe is now complete and the ‘saddle’ in place,
adjusted as described in the text.
The gun barrels in the kit are really poor, so were
replaced with spare Eduard parts.
This glazed panel protects the camera that sits behind it. The
window has been masked with a disc from Eduard’s masking set.
Rivet detail was reinstated around the wing roots using a fi ne
drill...
...And then the panel lines over the spine, with an RB
Productions Scriber.
As with the panel lines, rivets were reapplied over the
cleaned-up fuselage seam.
