HANNAH GREEN

GREEN’S HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Despite an opening-round 76 and third-round 77, Green
managed a solid T34th fi nish at the US Women’s Open
in late May before a disappointing missed cut in her next
start at the Meijer LPGA Classic. Having the weekend
off did, however, allow the West Australian to work on
her game in the lead up to the KPMG Women’s PGA
Championship held at Hazeltine National Golf Club. The
22-year-old took the lead on day one with a four-under
68 and never lost top spot on the leaderboard. A steady
even-par 72 on Sunday delivered her maiden LPGA Tour
victory and Australia’s fi rst women’s major since Karrie
Webb claimed the 2006 Kraft Nabisco.

  • With her victory, Green became the fi rst wire-to-wire winner of an LPGA major
since 2011, holding off Sung Hyun Park, who birdied the 72nd hole to put the
pressure on the former Karrie Webb scholarship winner. A clutch birdie at the tough
16th hole allowed Green a one-shot lead as she played the 18th hole, where an up
and down from the greenside bunker for apar
    and nine-under tournament total secured
the trophy. Green was showered with
beer by her fellow Australians, including
Webb, Su Oh and current winners of
the same scholarship she received in
2015, Grace Kim and Becky Kay.

  • After the high of making Australian golf
history, Green withdrew from the LPGA
Tour’s next event to return to Perth and celebrate with family and
friends, as well as her fellow members at Mount Lawley Golf Club.

  • Green’s victory came on an historic day for Australian women’s sport, with
Ash Barty climbing to the top of the world tennis rankings, while surfer
Sally Fitzgibbons did likewise with a victory of her own. Green’s major win
netted her US$577,500, eclipsing her previous career earnings from her
fi rst year-and-a-half on the LPGA Tour.
