touch with Terry, as the dealership was preparing
an anniversary celebration at the time and the
old photo archives were dusted off.
“The salesman at the time, Peter Robinson,
contacted me and said he had found some
photos of the car with AOL-257 numberplates
after it came back from Bathurst.”
Terry has shared those images, taken in
October 1969, with AMC for this story.
“I am still slowly restoring the car and have
managed to replicate all the original stickers on
the car at Bathurst and will be restoring the car
to the exact way it was when it nished (second
at) Bathurst in 1969.”
Terry also sent us images he sourced from
JenniferCromartyin theearlynoughtiesof its

outings in the hands of her husband Graham,
in addition to photos of McPhee’s signature on
the car’s glovebox. He does not wish to show a
progress shot of the car, preferring to showcase
the nished product when fully restored.
Readers with long memories will recall that
this story was partly told on AMC #30’s MIA
page, after the magazine put the call out for
information on its whereabouts in the previous
sue. Oldman was shyer back then, 2007, and
ished to rename anonymous, using the ‘Mr T’
eudonym.
Mr Terry told of uncovering more historical
vidence from the ‘69 race after he stripped
own the body shell which revealed a bent/
paired radiator support panel. There was
so some evidence of quarter panel damage
curred when McPhee got squeezed by the Mini
nd collided with an earthbank.

editor Oastler:
“Look forward to
a detailed feature
on this GT-HO
in AMC when
the restoration is
completed.”
Geez, Terry,
can you get a
wriggleon?

Below left: Owner Terry Oldman with McPhee before
the latter’s passing in 2009. Terry bought the car as an
unfi nished resto project... and, as a man of (too) many
projects, is yet to complete the job himself.
Below right: Oldman supplied us images of its current
state, in primer, and shots of a damaged left-rear
quarter-panel after sandblasting. The latter, he says,
shows damage evident in shots from October ’69.
