offat took his fourth touring car title in
1983, winning four rounds to narrowly
edge out George Fury, who gained extra points
from class wins despite his Nissan Bluebird
clearly being an outright contender like the
Mazda. But Nissan conceded the title by
surprisingly withdrawing from the  nal round in
protest against CAMS granting Moffat a bigger
and torquier 1.3-litre 13B rotary for the long-
distance races. It would produce an extra 30
horsepower, to 300bhp.
Moffat needed the new engine to match the
big V8s at Bathurst, but the other teams – which
were already getting beaten at other circuits, and
accused Moffat of sandbagging – played CAMS
for their own concessions, which negated the
advantage of the 13B. In the 1980s, politics ruled
Australian racing, and this time Moffat was on the
losing end.
