able to text so he could let
me know when his baby, my
first grandchild, was coming.
That was a good incentive
to work it out after a bit of
trial and error.
Also I don’t
have an email
account,
so I don’t
correspond
or order
anything
online.
I reason that if you don’t like
what you’ve bought, you
have to send it back and
that’s a hassle. Planning my
life seems simpler with a
paper diary and a pen. If
someone wants to make an
arrangement, I write it in.
I listen to a DAB radio that
I can move around the house

  • I unplug it from the kitchen
and plug in the bedroom, for

instance. I do have
vinyl records and CDs,
but I haven’t listened
to them for a while.
Up until a couple
of years ago I used
disposable cameras
and got the film
developed in the
high street. The photos
taken on smartphones
are really good quality
and I often ask my
family to send their
photos from their
phones – mainly
of my children and
grandchildren – to
my husband so we
can print them. I also
keep the digitally
printed birthday and
Mother’s Day cards,
with photos on them,
out in our lounge
and bedroom. I like
printed photographs.
I read books
avidly and get through one
to two a month – that’s
around 24 in a year. I pick
these up from bookstores.
I accept that I’m not as
tech savvy as my family. It
does make
me feel a
bit stupid
that I don’t
want to use
gadgets,
or can’t
move on to
high-tech things. My family
do make fun of me, but
not in a cruel way. The
only item of tech I might
like is a Fitbit, which tracks
your activity, although it
wouldn’t link to my current
mobile. All my family have
one and compare steps
with each other. However,
I walk so much that I think
I would beat them all!’
