✿ TRIM ESCALLONIA HEDGES as soon
as the flowers have finished. With
young hedges, cut flower-bearing
shoots close to the ground, to
encourage new growth from the base.
Regular trimming helps the plant
bush out and produce more blooms.

✿ WHILE HOLLYHOCKS are prone to
rust, they’re worth growing, with their
mass of flower spikes in many colours.
Sow at the same time as foxgloves and
try the new Hardy’s Digitalis Firebird.
Throw seed onto spare ground, thin
seedlings and transplant in autumn.

✿ LOOK FOR SIGNS OF botrytis or
mould in flowerbeds. Still, moist air
causes this, so the problem is worse in
overcrowded beds. Remove rotten
flowers and spray infected plants with
a Bayer Garden Fungus Fighter Plus, to
control and protect for up to three weeks.
