We look back at the most shocking

crime stories this week in history

2000: Body found

S

arah Payne, 8, was playing
hide and seek with her
two brothers in Kingston
Gorse, West Sussex, when she
was abducted by convicted sex
offender Roy Whiting.
It was 16 days later when,
on 17 July 2000, Sarah’s body
was found in overgrowth in
a field near Pulborough.
Whiting was arrested soon
after, and the following year

  • while in prison for a driving
    offence – he was convicted
and jailed for life for her murder.
The tragedy led to Sarah’s Law,
a scheme which allows anyone to
formally ask the police if someone
with access to a child has a record
    for child sex offences.

2005: Failed bombings

O

n 21 July 2005,
Hussain Osman,
Yassin Omar, Muktar
Said Ibrahim and Ramzi
Mohammed attempted
to carry out a terrorist
attack in London.
They’d made bombs
using hydrogen peroxide
and chapati flour and got
on various forms of public
transport across the capital.
But the devices failed
to detonate properly and
nobody was seriously injured.
The UK’s largest manhunt
began and they were all
arrested and jailed for life
on terrorism charges.

2012: PC not guilty

I

an Tomlinson died during a
G20 climate-change protest on
1 April 2009, after being hit with
a baton and pushed to the ground
by a police officer.
When an inquest ruled it
had been an unlawful death,
PC Simon Harwood was charged
with manslaughter.
He went on trial at Southwark
Crown Court but, on 19 July 2012,
was found not guilty by a jury.
The Met Police later reached an
out-of-court settlement over the death and apologised
‘unreservedly’ to Ian’s family.
