Summer vacation offers Tracy Pollan and her Mostly Plants cook-
book coauthors—sisters Dana and Lori and their mom, Corky—
welcome time to bond in the kitchen. When they’re all at Corky’s
house in Connecticut, “we’ll do a big family meal,” says Tracy, 59,
who has four kids with husband Michael J. Fox. “First there’s a
conversation about the menu, and that goes on for days.” It’s part
of the tradition: “We grew up with a model that family was fun
and did dinners, and now we do the same,” says Lori, 63. She and
Dana, 56, each have three kids, so there are plenty of tastes—
many of them vegetarian—to accommodate. Dinner always
includes a veggie entrée, a big salad, grains and an easy dessert
(see right). Though Tracy says the kids “look forward to a
huge tray of roasted vegetables,” Dana admits they’re not
fans of every dish. “They’ll tell us, ‘You know what? I don’t
think so,’ ” she says. But matriarch Corky, 90, says she’s
“always amazed” at her daughters’ cooking skills. And no
matter what they serve, every meal includes the same side.
“A lot of talking!” says Tracy with a laugh. —DANA ROSE FALCONE
